TCLP Analysis

TCLP stands for Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure.  TCLP is generally used to classify waste material for disposal.  It is a method that simulates what happens when a sample is disposed of in a landfill.

Meeting Analyst Demonstrations of Capabilities Requirements

To meet The NELAC Institutes (TNI) requirements for demonstrations of capabilities (DOC), a laboratory must be able to document the analyst's initial and continuing or ongoing DOC.   Section 5.5.4.2.2 of the 2003 NELAC Standard establishes the requirement for the DOC.  This section requires the laboratory to perform an initial DOC any time the laboratory changes instrument type, personnel or test method.  The DOC is used to demonstrate the analyst's performance on the applicable clean matrix and does not demonstrate performance on "real world" samples. Appendix C of the 2003 NELAC Standards further defines the necessary requirements for completing and documenting the DOC.

The Importance of Independently Prepared Quality Control Standards

The goal of any analysis is to measure the components of a sample as accurately and precisely as possible. In order to achieve this goal, the analyst must be confident that they have control of the measurement process.

A measurement process that is out of control produces data that is not accurate or defensible. The key to maintaining control of the measurement process and generating accurate, defensible data is the proper use of quality control standards.

Many people think that the only requirement of a quality control standard is that the value of the sample be known. While a known true value is essential to a quality control standard, there are several other pieces of information that should be available if it is to be considered a quality control standard. For this reason, independently prepared quality control samples purchased from an accredited provider are essential to producing accurate, defensible data.
