Samples, deadlines, paperwork, EPA, confusion It can only mean one thing, DMRQA is just around the corner (June - September). There have been many changes and confusion since the US EPA privatized the DMRQA program, but it is finally starting to get better. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's your DMRQA Provider.
The US EPA provides you with a long list of accredited Providers and you must decide the best provider for your lab. To make matters more confusing, being listed as an accredited Provider means only that the Provider has met the minimum requirements for DMRQA Accreditation. Shouldn't you expect more from your Provider than a sample that meets minimum requirements?
How do you pick the best Provider for your facility? Do you make a decision based on price alone or do you consider those things that you cannot put a price on?
Would you save money and time if you select a Provider that allowed you to run one set of samples that meet not just the DMRQA requirements, but also State and NELAC requirements? What if you could choose from several studies instead of just one?
How do you put a price on the amount of stress you encounter when the paper work is confusing? Can you place a dollar value on accurate, well-informed advice? What should excellent customer service be worth?
Unfortunately, these things are impossible to list on a price quote, but they are just as important as the samples. It is ultimately the program's design from start to finish that will determine what the samples actually cost.
Experience is valuable! Find out how much experience the Provider has running a Proficiency Testing Program. You may find yourself unraveling confusing paperwork and instructions if you choose a Provider with little experience coordinating Proficiency Testing Programs. You may receive conflicting advice because you speak with someone different each time you call. An inexperienced Provider may not understand your needs and limit your reporting and participation options.
Look beyond the cost of the samples when comparing Providers. Take the time to find out if the Provider gives you options to modify the DMRQA process to your lab's unique needs. Are there multiple reporting options? Can you select from more than one study? Are there hidden costs (such as reporting fees)?
With so many choices and so many Providers, take some time to weigh your options. Select a Provider that gives you choices, intelligent answers, and consistent customer service. Look for a Provider with the flexibility for you to tailor the DMRQA Program to your unique needs.
Who is going to be your light at the end of the DMRQA tunnel?
