Upcoming Changes to FOT Tables

Article written by Mike Haller, Quality Manager, Analytical Products Group, Inc.

Complete article from Edition 28 APG eNewsletter

Effective June 1, 2005, NELAC will require PT samples to be produced and evaluated using the new field-of-testing (FOT) tables. The new criteria were designed to correct several of the technical issues with the current FOT tables and, therefore, more fairly evaluate the laboratories.

The changes primarily affect concentration ranges, acceptance criteria, and PTRLs. In addition, some new analytes were moved to the accreditation FOT table. In contrast, a few analytes were moved from the accreditation FOT table to a new experimental table, and several other new analytes were added to the experimental FOT table.

In addition to the changes in the items mentioned above, several new footnotes were added to the tables. These footnotes will have a dramatic effect on the laboratory acceptance limits, and you should review each of them very closely.

The first APG studies affected by the new field-of-testing table are June WP and July WS. The changes will also affect the DMRQA Specific Study. APG remains committed to providing laboratories with the highest quality, most-effective PT programs in the industry, meeting both US EPA and NELAC requirements. Please contact APG if you have specific questions about the impact of these changes.
