The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control EQC State Quality Assurance Management Office (SCDHEC-EQC) held two Chlorine Workshops in March 2005 to instruct staff on proper protocols for the calibration and measurement of chlorine in water samples using the DPD colorimetric method. In December 2004, Chlorine SOP protocols were revised to address ongoing problems staff were experiencing using handheld chlorine spectrophotometers. The workshops served to provide SOP guidance, answer questions and troubleshoot meters through hands-on exercises. APG QC samples were prepared to provide known chlorine solutions for staff to analyze during the workshops. Response from staff was very favorable.
The Office of Quality Assurance has oversight for all quality assurance protocols, procedures, training, and corrective actions employed to ensure quality data is available for decision-making. As part of the state's QA program, field inspectors participate in annual WS and WP Proficiency Studies. Recent changes to SOP protocols proved beneficial. Forty field staff reported 100% acceptable results for pH and Residual Chlorine PT samples during the January 2005 WS Study from APG.
