New Water and Soils products added beginning November 2005
APG is pleased to announce we have added new
state specific samples in wastewater, drinking water and soils.
The wastewater and drinking water samples are available November 2005. New

Benzyl alcohol or Not Benzyl alcohol?
Historically false positives for benzyl alcohol in the Base/Neutral Extractable have plagued proficiency testing (PT) participants.
The most probable source of the benzyl alcohol is the extraction process for the base neutrals,
in which a pH adjustment is necessary to obtain recovery of the full range of compounds.

Method Required Quality Control: Smoke & Mirrors or Common Sense
All
EPA methods have a Quality Control section which usually requires several cross checks of
method performance. These cross checks include Continuing Calibration Standards, Blanks, Duplicates,
Matrix Spikes, and Laboratory Control Standards (LCS). Only the LCS is designed to actually
monitor the performance of the method. The other components measure instrument drift, matrix
effects, or contamination issues.

Pizza Party Winner Announced
The
winner of the DMRQA Online Data Entry Pizza Party is Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer
District, St. Louis, MO. Gregg Frazier, General Manager, of APG will delivery the
pizzas to St. Louis in October. APG would like to thank the more than 1500
laboratories that registered for the drawing by entering their data online for
DMRQA Study 25.
Winners of the IPOD Shuffle
Congralations to Karen Costa of U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range who
won the July iPod shuffle by responding to our questions about the soil Proficiency Testing Programs.
